Floods in Bihar and Rajasthan: Situation remains critical

As the flood situation in Bihar remains critical, the Army and the Air Force have been requested to stay on alert in case of any fatalities, reported India Today. The death toll in the flood hit state has crossed 90, as reported by Vishva Gujarat.

Two lakh people have reportedly lost their homes in flood ravaged Bihar, as waters from Sone and Ganga rivers breached embankments, reported Vishva Gujarat.

Home Minister Rajnath Singh, on Monday, spoke to chief ministers of four flood-hit states — Bihar, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand — and assured Centre's help in dealing with the disaster.

"I assured the chief ministers of full cooperation from the Centre in the flood mitigation drive launched by the states," an official statement said.

The rising water level of Ganga has affected all the districts situated along the banks of the river in Bihar.

Ganga and five other rivers have been flowing above the danger mark in Patna, Bhagalpur, Khagaria, Katihar, Siwan, Bhojpurand Buxar districts, prompting officials to keep a close watch over the situation.

The Ganga river has been flowing at maximum level (above danger mark) of the season at six places in various parts of three districts- Digha ghat, Gandhi ghat, Hathidah in Patna, Bhagalpur and Kahalgaon in Bhagalpur district and Buxar district, a Disaster Management Department statement said.

Other rivers flowing above danger mark are — River Sone at Koilwar (Bhojpur) River Punpun at Sripalpur (in Patna), while Ghaghra remained in spate at Gangpur-Siswan in Siwan district, Kosi at Baltara and Kursela in Katihar district and Burhi Gandak in Khagaria, it said.

Five teams of National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) had been deployed in Patna on Sunday, while two teams in Vaishali district to step up the relief and rescue operation in their flood-affected riverine areas, the department said.

It was also decided to take the flood-affected people residing in riverine areas to safer places in relief camps where they would be provided food, water, medical facilities.

The Air Force at Gorakhpur has also been asked to be on alert so that it can be used to drop food packets to the affected areas, if needed.

The Chief Minister Nitish Kumar said that holidays of all the officers have been cancelled in order to facilitate their deployment in flood affected areas.

All the DMs and SPs of flood affected districts would keep moving in order to assess the ground realities; he said adding that DMs would carry out aerial survey of their respective districts.
